Welcome to our adventure. Let me introduce ourselves. My name is Natasha. My significant other's name is Cody. We have two children, Skyla and Micah. We have decided to move out of our 4,200 square foot home and live in a fifth wheel. Since I have been blogging for many years I decided to document and share this adventure with all of you. Enjoy!

As you may know, we decided to move from a 4,200 square feet home outside of Indianapolis to a fifth wheel parked in central Illinois.

So why would a family of four leave their large home in a big city to move into a fifth wheel parked in the middle of pretty much nowhere? I would love to explain.

SAVE MONEY

Our first reason for living in a fifth wheel is to save money. Not only are we hoping to save money in general, we are hoping to save money for a hefty down payment to build a house. We anticipate saving money three ways.

Reducing our monthly bills

Spending less money in general due to space

Less interest paid on student loans due to paying them off early

By living in a fifth wheel we reduce our monthly bills significantly. We will no longer have a rent payment, which was $1750 per month for our home outside of Indianapolis. We will be using well water so we will not be paying a water bill. We will not have cable so we will no longer have a cable bill.

We will spend less money in general due to the lack of space. For example buying clothes and shoes will be limited because we don't have space for more clothes. Right now I have a very large closet and I tend to buy shoes and clothes even though I don't really need them. I have tons of clothes and shoes but I don't wear most of them so when space is very limited I will not be buying as much as I have now. Another example of spending less due to lack of space is not buying as many toys for the kids. The kids have plenty of space at the house for toys in their rooms and closets however space in the fifth wheel is not as ample. I plan on putting most of their current toys in storage and having them go every few weeks and switch out toys so it's like getting new toys to play with every few weeks without the cost and without taking up space in the fifth wheel.

Another way we will be saving money by living in a fifth wheel is by having the ability to pay off our student loans quicker which means less interest that we have to pay on the loans in the long run.

LIVE CLOSER TO FAMILY

Currently we live about an hour and a half from our families. Both of our parents and siblings live in central Illinois so that is where we are going to move. In fact, the location we are parking our fifth wheel is on Cody's family farm. It is 20 acres and his parents' home is there as well as the farm headquarters. We will be living right next to his parents while my parents and siblings live about 15 minutes from there.

START PLANTING ROOTS

This reason is not necessarily why we decided to live in a fifth wheel; it is more why we decided to park it at Cody's family farm. We have a seasonal campsite, also located in central Illinois about an hour west of the farm, however we did not want to park the fifth wheel there to live. Although out seasonal site is in the campground that made me absolutely love camping, or some would call "glamping", it is not the location where I wanted the kids to go to school. Since we plan to eventually build a house at the farm it makes sense to live in the fifth wheel at the farm so the kids can start going to the school that they will go to when we build our house (which is the same school Cody went to).

Another benefit of parking it at the farm is that Cody will have the opportunity to help his dad around the farm. He already talks of all his big ideas to make the farm better and grow the farm. So not only will he be happy to help around the farm, I'm sure his parents will appreciate the help.

Coming from living on a busy street in a city, I never thought I'd have any interest in living in the country but Cody's love for the farm rubbed off on me and I couldn't even image moving back to the city I grew up in.

SIMPLIFY

Lastly, living in a fifth wheel will help us simplify our lives. Sometimes life gets so busy with doing things and crowded with actual things that life starts to seem chaotic. Chaos is the opposite of peace and God is a peaceful God so if we want to be like God we need to have a sense of peace in our lives. I know getting rid of possessions and being away from all the hustle and bustle of a city is just a step in simplifying our lives but it is our first step towards having a simpler life.

Here are a few reasons that downsizing my living space will benefit me as a person (and I must apologize for how lengthy this post is):

I'm Materialistic!

In the summer of 2015 God started to reveal to me some of my many flaws. Specifically the fact that I'm materialistic. It started when Cody and I were on our coast to coast road trip (which you can read about at The Smart "Coast to Coast"er) and we stopped by a mall in Seattle, Washington. I bought a couple Michael Kors purses, which many of you may know are quite expensive. A few days later I was on Pinterest and saw one of the exact purses I had just bought in a different color. I had bought a light gray one and the picture I saw was of a white one. The moment I saw it I just wanted it so bad. Even though I had just bought two new purses and hadn't even used them yet I so badly wanted the exact same purse in a different color.

I got online and started to order the white purse right there in the truck while we were driving to our next destination almost immediately after seeing the other color purse on Pinterest. It was in that moment that God spoke to my heart. It wasn't a whisper; God was yelling at my heart. I feel like he just slapped me upside the head and was just like "what is wrong with you". It was exactly what I needed. I had become so wrapped up in having things and buying things that I wasn't satisfied unless I was spending money on something, anything, including another purse exactly like one I already had that I would hardy use because I already had too many.

I realized that there are two reasons why me being materialistic isn't good. First, it is not a trait that God has, therefore it is not a trait that I should have. "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him" - 1 John 2:15. I did not even have to look this verse up. It is the first verse I ever memorized when I was a child. How had I went from hiding this verse in my heart to completely ignoring it? When did I become so materialistic? Why was I so wrapped up in having things? Second, being materialistic means I'm buying things, spending money on things, spending money on things that do not really matter, money that could be used for other things that do matter.

It wasn't just the purse. I mean that was the first time I really felt God telling me to work on this issue, but I wasn't materialistic because I wanted a white purse when I already had the gray one. I was materialistic because I ALWAYS wanted something new. And when I got something new I immediately wanted something else. All I had to do was look around at everything I had and it was obvious. Anyone could come into my home and see how materialistic I am. This revelation (because it was definitely a revelation to me) was almost embarrassing. Do people look at me that way? Am I known as a materialistic person? Is that one of the qualities that people identify me with? UGHHH!

I started to look at my life a little differently after God opened my eyes. Why did I have over 100 pairs of shoes? Why did I have 150 dresses? Why did I hoard craft supplies? Why would I buy new dishes when my old ones were perfectly fine? Why did I always buy new household decorations? The answer...I was filling a void in my life that could only be filled with God. It's not like I wasn't a Christian. We go to church. We volunteer at church. Our children go to a private Christian school. We pray before we eat. Cody and I do daily devotionals together. We listen to Christian music. I mean we are living a life that puts God at the forefront however I was allowing things to have a place in my heart when really all I needed to do was open that space up and let God fill it up.

I'm not saying I've completely changed. I still struggle with wanting new things but the difference now is I really consider my motives before I buy something. Do I need it? Will I use it? Why do I want it? Can I get the same thing significantly cheaper? These are just a few questions I ask myself before I buy something.

Now let me say that buying things for yourself is not wrong. Not by any means. However always desiring more is not the life I wanted.

I Want to be Debt Free by the Age of 40!

I just turned 30 last month so that still leaves me with 10 years to go but Cody and I have discussed at length how we can be debt free in 10 years and we have a game plan to do it. Now obviously we know life throws curve balls and things could change at any minute, like losing our jobs or illness or any number of things. Maybe be won't be able to stick to the current plan but if God continues to bless us and we stick to the plan we have then being debt free is very doable in 10 years.

Our first step is paying off our student loans. Unfortunately for Cody, I came into the relationship with about $75,000 in student loans. I got lucky in that he only had about $13,000 in student loans. He had much more financial help from the government while pursuing his bachelors degree than I did while in graduate school. My student loans are for my master's degree and the two and a half years I spent working on a doctorate. So overall we had about $88,000 in student loan debt between the two of us. For the first year we just made our minimum monthly payments and didn't think much about paying them off early until we started discussing becoming debt free by the time I am 40. When we made the decision to become debt free we started working on a game plan to pay off our student loans early. You can read all about our student loan payoff game plan here.

In order to be debt free we need to pay off our current debts and make sure that any future debts we acquire can be paid off within the next 10 years.

I Want to Move Back Home!

I'm from central Illinois and I always thought I would never move away however I had to move for work and I long to be back in central Illinois. Although I don't necessarily want to move back to Champaign (where I grew up) I do want to move back to Champaign County. My family and friends are there.

So those are my reasons for wanting to move from our house to a fifth wheel.Natashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00089846235435592353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142540702526318236.post-20720578355954613862018-01-31T14:16:00.000-06:002018-05-23T12:02:10.730-05:00Pray, Pray, Pray

If you know anything about our story then you may know that the idea of moving into a fifth wheel just came to me one day. At first I thought it was a silly idea but over the course of a few days it kept popping up in my mind. Finally I decided to tell Cody about the idea. We were making one of our twice a week drives to central Illinois, which was a two hour drive there and then a two hour drive back that we made twice a week. I pretty much just told him my idea without really thinking of how I should set it up. I don’t think he really thought I was serious. I think he was thinking I was just saying it as a fun idea that would never actually happen. A few days later I brought it up again and I could tell he had been thinking about it since I mentioned it. We discussed it several times, the practicality of it, the benefits of it, the downsides of it and, finally, we decided it was the best idea for our family. You can read all about the reasons we decided to move into the fifth wheel here.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

This may seem like we just made the decision and that was that but it is so much more complicated than that. When I couldn’t get the idea out of my head the first couple days I simply prayed about it. At first it was just a quick prayer asking God to put it from my mind if it wasn’t something that He wanted for our lives. Obviously that didn’t happen. I felt like I was being pulled in that direction. When Cody and I first started talking about it we would pray about it together, and let me tell you, Cody prays about everything, every day. I love when we pray together. He always thanks God for all we have and asks God to continue blessing us. So it was no surprise that our prayers together ended up consisting of praying about the decision to move.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

Although God didn’t open up the heavens and speak directly to me I knew He was calling us to do make this decision. Everything about it was consistent about what the Bible says. The whole goal of living in the fifth wheel is to save money and pay off debts, which is a biblical practice. It also aligned with the previous things God had been working on in me: being materialistic, paying off my student loans and becoming debt free by 40 (read about those here).

If you or your family are deciding to make the change from a house to a fifth wheel, or travel trailer, or RV or whatever it may be, make sure you take the time to ask God if that is really what He wants for your life. It is not the life for everyone and God doesn't call everyone to do it. Pray diligently and be obedient.

Natashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00089846235435592353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142540702526318236.post-29215829110048163092018-01-30T09:40:00.000-06:002018-05-23T12:02:31.549-05:00Paying Off Student LoansThe dreaded student loans! Ughhhh!!! Our student loan payments each month are a killer and that is mostly my fault. When Cody and I met I had about $75,000 in student loan debt while Cody ony had about $13,000. His monthly loan payment is $161 a month and mine was $808.

As you may know by now we want to be debt free in 10 years and that includes our student loans. If we pay the monthly payment each month we will have them paid off within 7 years. However, as with any loan, you also pay more interest the longer you have the loan so we knew we had to pay them off earlier than 7 years.

We were at church one Sunday and the pastor showed us a Dave Ramsey clip about debt. You have to watch the whole thing but below is just a clip.

This video struck a cord in me. I knew God was calling me to pay off my debt. Luckily for Cody and me, neither of us have credit card debt nor a mortgage; we only have student loan debt and his truck loan debt. We paid cash for Ruby, our fifth wheel. We paid cash for my engagement ring, so when Cody gets around to proposing we already have the ring and we have no debt on it.

If you watch the whole video Dave Ramsey suggests taking all your debts and writing them on a piece of paper in order from the smallest to the largest and displaying it in a prominent place in your home where you will see it often. I did just that. Rather than write the total amount of my student loans I actually wrote them as each individual loan. Cody's student loan is second to highest, while the rest are mine. We did not include Cody's truck loan because we want to first focus on our student loans.

We still make the monthly payments that are due on the student loans however we are paying a little bit more when we can. For example, when we received our tax refund this year (we claim zero all year so we receive a refund when we do our taxes) we used all of that money to pay off my smallest student loan. It is a small victory being able to cross off one of those loans.

By paying off the smallest loan my loan payment each month went from $807.83 to $726.28, which is a $81.55 savings each month. Since our budget already includes $808 for my student loan we are now paying $80 more each month to the next smallest loan amount. If we had just made the minimum payment to that small loan it would have been paid over 89 months and would have cost us $7257.95 rather than the $5765.84 lump sum, so we saved $1492.11 by paying it off when we did.

We will not be able to pay off our debts overnight but it is our hope that with the money we save from living in the fifth wheel that we will be able to pay them off much quicker.

Some people may wonder how we are able to just pick up and move in our line of work. Well first let me explain what Cody and I do for a living. We are manufacturers' representatives. We specifically sell high voltage electrical equipment to energy companies for transmission and substation applications.

The only reason we moved to Indianapolis was because many of my customers are in Indiana, most being in the Indianapolis area. Cody quit his job in Illinois and completely changed careers to start doing the same line of work I do. The reason we are able to move and keep our same jobs is because we work remotely. It is not necessary to be in physical proximity of our customers however we do have to travel to go visit with them often.

Originally when I got into this line of work Cody and I were not together so I was a single mom needing to go see my customers when the kids were at school so living closer to them was imperative. Now that Cody is involved with my business he is able to do most of the traveling that is more than just during the day when the kids are in school. Him coming aboard allows me to no longer need to live in Indianapolis because one of us can travel and one of us can stay with the kids, as long as him and I do not need to travel to see different customers at the same time.

Our business is all commissioned based. If we sell a product the factory pays us a percentage of what we sell. We represent four manufacturers as of now but we are always trying to pick up new product lines.

This line of work can be a bit unpredictable. Some months we bring in only a few thousand dollars and other months we can bring in over $10,000 in commissions. Sometimes we work really hard to make a sell and it falls through, while other times we just get an email from a customer saying they want to buy something and we didn't have to put in any work to make the sale. Sometimes an energy company will order many products at once and then we won't hear from them in a few months. We never know how much money we will make any particular month so we have to budget for the not-so-profitable months.

Many people have careers that allow them to work remotely so living a nomadic lifestyle is very doable now-a-days. For us we do not need to have a job where we work remotely because we want to start planting roots in the town where we will be building a house after this adventure of living in a fifth wheel is over. We are grateful that we do work remotely though because it allows us to spend more time together as a family and it allows us to travel extensively in the summer, like we did last summer, which you can read about here.

It was towards the end of November 2015 that we made the decision to live in our fifth wheel however the fifth wheel we had already parked at our seasonal campsite just wouldn't accommodate our living needs. We started looking for a new fifth wheel. We searched everywhere, online that is. We looked at every floor plan, within our price range of course, and finally found the one we wanted. Unfortunately there wasn't one local so we had to take a 6 hour drive to Pennsylvania to trade in our old fifth wheel and buy the new one. It was definitely worth it.

Here is the floor plan that we went with. It is a 2014 Keystone Avalanche 361TG

There were several reasons we liked this floor plan over other ones. The bunkhouse was a must. We have two children and they are going to share the bunkhouse. This model has a half bath located off the bunkhouse, which is important to us because we didn't want the children waking us up in the middle of the night if they need to use the restroom. The bedroom has washer/dryer hookups in the closet which was a must for me. I do not want to spend time at a laundromat. The dining room table is actually a table with chairs, not the booth style we have had before. Another thing we liked is the reclining sofa. Space is a major obstacle in a fifth wheel so the fact that there are five slides makes a big difference. Every little bit of extra space counts.

Below are pictures of the fifth wheel we bought. We love it!
We no longer live in Indiana, which means we no longer live in a house. Our home has wheels and we plan to put it to good use this summer. We have 5 trips planned and we are still trying to schedule another trip with friends.

Unfortunately the kids are with their dads on Memorial Day weekends so our first night living in the camper was just me and Cody. We finished putting all of our stuff in storage and I've just finished unpacking all the stuff for the camper. It was a long evening yesterday and has been a long day today but I'm glad everything was done so quickly.

As I was unpacking all the stuff I wanted to keep at the camper I realized I didn't have enough space for it all so I started putting stuff in boxes to take to storage. I guess I don't need as many pans and mixing bowls and cups and utensils as I had hoped. Also we keep most of our food in lock tight plastic containers and after trying to put all the containers into the pantry I decided that we will not be using the containers anymore because they take up too much room, so they will go to storage as we eat the stuff in them.

Cody was so sweet to make dinner last night. I think he could tell I was wanting to rip my hair out with unpacking so he made baked ziti. I'm a lucky lady. Actually when I'm done with this post I'm going to make leftovers for a late lunch. I haven't eaten yet today. Ok I take that back, I ate two mini donuts around 11am but my bely is growling so leftovers it is.

Cody is gone for most of the day today helping my dad move a shed from one place to another. He's been so excited to help him move it. I think he just likes hanging out with my dad regardless of what they are doing.

It seems so surreal right now that I live in a fifth wheel. Anyone that knows me well knows that camping, or glamping, is something I love to do and that it is my hopes to live and travel in an RV when I retire. This is good practice until then.

I think it is important to take a moment and thank God for allowing us to take this amazing adventure. It is because of Him that I get this amazing view. No seriously, I took this picture inside the camper. I am so blessed!

I thought it was fitting to listen to one of my favorite albums to come out recently. Illinois by Brett Eldridge. I particularly like the title track. I first heard the song when I lived in Indiana and it pulled on my heart strings. I just love my home state. I hope I never have to move out of state again but who knows where life will lead us. You can watch the video for the song below if you feel so inclined.
As with any kitchen in a camper it is a bit cramped and there is not much countertop space or storage. In an effort to maximize the kitchen space I have done a few things that made a big difference in the space. Below are two pictures of my kitchen stove area before I did anything to it.

As you can see from the pictures above the space was not efficiently being used. I added a hanging fruit basket that I purchased on Amazon. I also bought the stove cover from Amazon. At IKEA I bought a Fintorp organizer. It is a rail with hooks that I hang cooking utensils on. I also hung two IKEA spice racks on the back wall and use another one just next to the stove. I absolutely love the IKEA magnetic knife holder. It was easy to install and it holds the knives securely in place, even when we are driving. I used a 3M hook to hang hot pads on the wall as well.

I have had two travel trailers and two fifth wheels and none of them have had a washer or dryer in them, let alone a washer/dryer combo. We purchased the washer/dryer at Camping World. It was on sale. The total with tax and the two year warranty was $1516.31.

The other travel trailers and fifth wheels we had were only used recreationally but since we are living in our fifth wheel we knew that getting a washer/dryer was very important to us. Luckily, when we were looking to by the fifth wheel that we would live in we knew we would need a washer/dryer so we purchased a fifth wheel that had the hookups in it already. You can see the fifth wheel we purchased here.

The washer/dryer unit we purchased is a Splendide 7100XC. You can find it here.

Cody installed the unit in about 30 minutes. The first week we had it was during Spring Break so we stayed in the fifth wheel during that time even though we haven't officially moved into it yet.

The washer/dryer works perfectly! I'm so happy to have it. We will not have to go to a laundromat all the time to do laundry, although we will have to go to wash bigger things like blankets and pillows. It holds much more than I expected. I can wash a king size sheet with a couple hand towels at the same time. I cannot express how thrilled I am to have it.

Have you ever noticed that there is stuff down in the vent? In the fifth wheel it seems like there is always stuff falling through the crack of the vents. How do you prevent dirt and stuff from falling through the cracks yet still allow the air to go through it? Cover the vent with pantyhose!

I took pictures as I did the project but really I didn't need to. Simply unscrew the vent an take it off, clean out the vent (I used homemade Clorox wipes - found here), cover the vent with pantyhose knee highs then screw the vent back into place. So EASY!!!

Going from a 4,200 square foot home to a fifth wheel can be a bit of an adjustment. One thing I liked about having a large home is having a large bathroom that had a vanity where I would get ready in the morning. I'd do my makeup and my hair while sitting comfortably at the vanity. Unfortunately, the fifth wheel does not have a vanity so I decided to utilize what we had to create a similar space.

First, I was lucky that our fifth wheel has a small dresser in the bedroom. Below you can see what I had to work with, a small dresser directly under a window with a TV above it. This photo has been brightened so you can really see the area before I did anything to it however the lighting in the bedroom was minimal, especially when the blinds were closed.

My first step was to add some lighting to the area. I did not know exactly what or how I was going to do this so I just went to Menards to see what the options were. I wanted to do this project myself without Cody's help even though I know he would have done it if I had asked.

At Menards I found simple track lighting that I could do myself and because the area has an available outlet I could just plug it in.

I bought a 2 foot track, 3 lights, and a live end that plugs into an outlet.
I ended up adding two tracks of lighting and then ordering a wireless light switch so that I can just push a light switch on the wall and the lights come on.

After I had all this amazing, much needed lighting I bought a mirror at Lowes that was the size I needed. I kind of just slipped it under the valance and used my vanity tray to keep it from sliding down.

I turned the mirror around when taking the pictures because I didn't think anyone wanted to see a picture of me in the mirror taking a picture of the mirror.

I wanted to put our website address on the fifth wheel but I didn't want to spend a whole lot on it. I got on Amazon and looked up custom vinyl and found a very inexpensive solution. I purchased the custom vinyl from here. Because of the umber of letters I have in the web address I had to purchase two of them but for less than $20 I think this was a great deal!

I used a towel with warm water and cleaned the area where I wanted to put the vinyl. I let it dry then Cody and I followed the directions, which were easy, and we applied the vinyl. And....done!
Although I love the adventure there are things I miss about living in a house.

Long, hot showers - In a camper the water heater is small and doesn't get as hot.

Kitchen prep space- Making a good size dinner takes every inch of counter space

Bigger refrigerator - Camper refrigerators are much smaller.

Privacy - This doesn't mean privacy in general. This is our code word for needing to use the restroom and not wanting everyone to hear us so they must leave the camper.

Steady temperature - The temperature seems to fluctuate quite a bit. Maybe it is our particular camper...I don't know.

Thick mattress - Our mattress is pretty thin, even with a pillow top cover on it.

Laundry not shaking the house - When I do laundry the loads always make the camper shake just a little bit but it is still noticeable.

Not having to explain my choice of home - In a house nobody asks you why you live there, whereas in the camper we get asked why we live in a fifth wheel often and then we have to explain it and it can be uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing.

Normal plumbing - The camper requires work in terms of the septic.

Water pressure - This may not be the case in all cases, but the water we are hooke up to is a light spit at best.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 18.0pt;">Overall, living in the camper is amazing. It is an
adventure that we are happy to be a part of however we do miss some things
about living in a house.

I have not been looking forward to writing this post nor did I finish it in one sitting. Money is such an awkward subject to discuss with strangers especially when it is about your personal finances, however, I think it is necessary here for us. Our adventure of living in a fifth wheel has the specific purpose of us saving money in order to put a $100,000 down payment on a house, so I think it is important for you to see how we do that.

Let's start with our fixed bills while we lived in Indianapolis then look at our fixed bills living in the fifth wheel.

Rent: $1755

Electricity: $146.91

Gas: $115.99

Water: $28.95

Garbage: $38.97
Sewer: $45

Cable, Internet, Home phone/fax: $190.52

Student Loans: Natasha - $726.28 Cody - $161

State Farm: $220 (This includes insurance for our vehicles, golf cart, fifth wheel, renter's insurance and life insurance)

Truck Payment: $611

Health Insurance: $710
Tuition for Private School: $1000 ($12,000 yearly for 2 children broken into monthly payments)

Our cellphone bills are a business expense so that is not something we pay each month. Also you can see that I did not include groceries, clothes, household items, beauty supplies, fuel, etc.

Total Fixed Bills in House: $5749.62

June - Fifth Wheel

Storage Unit: $269
Student Loans: Natasha - $726.28 Cody - $161
State Farm: $220 (This includes insurance for our vehicles, golf cart, fifth wheel, renter's insurance and life insurance)
Truck Payment: $611
Health Insurance: $845 (This amount changed because we moved to a new state and had to purchase different policies)

Total Fixed Bills in Fifth Wheel: $2782.28

What We Save Each Month: $2967.34

If we live in our fifth wheel for a year, which is about the time frame we are looking at, we will have saved $35,608.08 in fixed expenses alone and that doesn't even include the typical amount we are currently budgeting for each month to go into savings.

We are not looking to save the whole $100,000 while living in the fifth wheel, as we have already saved $60,000 before even living in the fifth wheel, however we do not only want to have $100,000 in savings and use it all on a house. We would like to have more than that in savings so that when we use our down payment we still have emergency money in the bank.

As you can see from our numbers our expectation of putting $100,000 down on a house is very doable within the timeframe we have set. As I have said before though, we do not know what curveballs life may throw our way so these are just our hopes and expectations if life goes according to plan and God continues to bless our finances the way He has been.

I felt the need to share the financial benefits of our journey because it is the whole reason for this adventure but it's an uncomfortable topic so I am done discussing it now. Whew....awkward finance post over!!

When living in a house I had this large standup jewelry armoire that was filed with jewelry. The first step was to decide what I really needed. I packed the rest for storage (see how I did that here). What I decided to take with I put in a ThirtyOne jewelry holder that I used to use for traveling. It is small but holds each piece of jewelry in a small fabric pouch inside.

I wanted to know if RV toilet paper is really necessary in a camper or if we could use the same toilet paper we used while living in a house. The toilet paper on the right is RV toilet paper and the toilet paper on the left is Members Mark toilet paper form Sam's Club. I took the same number of sheets and put them in water. After about an hour I stirred both gently. After a full day I compared the two. I couldn't notice a difference. I asked my significant other if he noticed any difference and he didn't either.

We had already purchased a lot of the RV toilet paper but when that ran out we started using the Sam's Club one again and had no problems. Now I must say that our camper is newer and has a very nice septic system so I'm not sure if everyone will have this same experience with using regular toilet paper but this has been our experience.

Below are simple pictures and explanations of what we did.

I installed a new shower head (Oxygenics® BodySpa Handheld Shower Head). It was about $40 and it is much better than the old one. I also put a mount lower for my son who is 6 years old so that it is at a more convenient place for him.

Under one of the bunks that fold up there was originally a couch, however when we purchased the camper the couch had already been removed. We put storage cubes on each side and made a desk. Since we work from home this desk was a must for us.

With some unused wall space I created a command center for us as well as a storage area. I used ThirtyOne organizing pouches on the wall that I already had before. I added a "Menu" page and an "I Love You Because" page to the organizer because I could use an expo marker to change it whenever needed. I also used Trone organizers from IKEA to hold shoes and other items.

More kitchen organization! I used command hooks to hang measuring cups and pot holders, I used a label maker to print out the size of each cup and put it next to each hook.

I used zip ties whenever we traveled to make sure the cabinets didn't open while on the road. I learned the hard way about doing this because the first trip we took we opened up the fifth wheel after a day of driving to find all my Pyrex baking dishes had fell out of the cabinet above the refrigerator and there was glass everywhere.

I hung up stuffed animal storage in each bunk. My kids have tons of stuffed animals they like to play with but I didn't want them on the bed all the time taking up space. I bought it from Amazon for $15 for both of them. The pink bed organizer is from IKEA for $4.
I made curtains for the kids' bunks. I used a shower curtain to hang them up and just bought fabric and sewed a curtain. This way the kids have some sense of privacy.
Cody, Skyla and Micah went to The Factory, which is an indoor trampoline place. They also went to The Track, which is a go kart and arcade place. They spent almost the entire day doing those two things. They came back with a ton of stories about how much fun they had. For dinner we went to Steamers and ate SO MANY oysters.

6.5 hour drive home. We stopped at Subway for lunch. About an hour from home we had a tire pop and Cody changed it on the side of the interstate. I’m so lucky to have someone who can do something like that without complaining one bit. About a half hour from home a can in front of us on the highway fell asleep while driving and ran off the road through two backyards and hit a tree. Of course Cody jumps out to help them while I call the police. They were ok.

We decided to take a trip with our new fifth wheel. It is about 10 feet shorter than the old one we lived in and also weighs much less. We chose to go to South Haven, Michigan which is about 3 hours from home.

We stayed at the KOA in Covert so South Haven was only a 15 minute drive. We did not bring the kids on this trip so we were able to do more adult friendly activities. We went to the Arclight Brewing Company in Watervliet, the Great Mead Brewing Company in Bangor, and the Coppercrast Distillery in Saugatuck. There were lots of wineries and vineyards in the area but we decided to still with local beer and liquor.

Besides drinking we went to downtown South Haven, which has a ton of cute stores. We went to the beach in South Haven where we saw the lighthouses. For lunch we ate at Taste, which is known for having small plates. We ordered 5 different plates and shared them. I wish we had went there for dinner because the restaurant seemed like more of a dinner place rather than a lunch place.

We went to a Chili Cookoff in Saugatuck. For $.50 we could sample chili from each contestant. It was so delicious. We then walked to all the downtown shops in Saugatuck, which were similar to the shops in South Haven.

We went to ATVing one afternoon. It was $100 a person per hour. Unfortunately I'm inexperienced in riding and I hit the back of Cody's ATV. The damage, which we had to pay for, was $1300. Ouch! We spent more paying for that than we did on the whole trip. I'm lucky I wasn't hurt. Cody didn't get upset about the cost and we even laughed about it afterwards. I think we were both just thankful that it wasn't worse. The owner said that the amount of damage was in the top 3 that they have ever had there. I don't think I'm going to go ATVing anymore.

Overall the trip was fun! It was a few days of relaxing in a very laid back part of Michigan. No stress, no busyness. We will definitely be going back.
Natashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00089846235435592353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142540702526318236.post-44875813440503244122016-10-01T13:23:00.000-05:002018-06-28T13:46:57.396-05:00Niagara Falls, New York

We left from Cleveland at around 10am and started the journey to the KOA in Grand Island, New York, which is about 15 minutes from Niagara Falls. We set up camp and headed out to utilize the hours left in the day. We decided to stay in the area for the day since we had spent so much time driving. We grabbed a few hot dogs for dinner at a place called Buffalo Dogs. They had so many options for toppings. We then went swimming in the heated pool at the campground that also had two water slides. This was the first time our 5 month old had been in a pool. She loved splashing.

Today was the day I looked forward to the most. We drove to Toronto Canada, which was about an hour and a half drive. We went downtown to a quaint restaurant called La Pallete. Our sole purpose in going to Toronto was to go to this restaurant because they serve horse. No joke. We ate horse. It was divine! Seriously, it tasted amazing. Our 8 year old even loved it. We started with the horse tartare (pictured below), which is raw horse and for our main courses we had duck confit and cheval (which is the horse tenderloin). Everything tasted great and it was worth the 3 hours of driving.

Today we started our day by going to Old Fort Niagara, which a fort that is about 300 years old. It was so neat being able to go into the castle and all the buildings. The view of the lake was just beautiful. There are people dressed to look like soldiers and they do demonstrations. It’s just a simple fun place to go.

If you know anything about RVs and what a black tank is then you know this is not a fun thing to deal with. Our last day of traveling until we got home. Cleveland to central Illinois. This was about a 6 hour drive. It’s always a good moment when you pull in the driveway of your home after being gone. We had a great trip but I’m happy to be home.

There were many reasons we decided to live in a fifth wheel (read about them here), however a few situations have changed and it no longer made sense to live in the fifth wheel. We have purchased our first home together. That does not mean our fifth wheel adventures end here though. We already have a trip planned for next week with the fifth wheel.

Let me explain why living in our fifth wheel no longer made sense for our family.

Our main reason to live in a fifth wheel was to save money. In the time that we lived in the fifth wheel we saved an additional $10,000 to put towards a house. On top of that since we bought a house we traded in our 2014 Keystone Avalanche for a 2005 Forest River Flagstaff. The price difference meant $21,000 in our pocket. So we had an additional $31,000 saved since May.

Living closer to family was a big reason for living in the fifth wheel. We did live on the farm with Cody's parents but my parents, two sisters, brother, niece and nephew all lived about 20 minutes away. We ended up buying a house in the town that my family lives in. Now our kids go to the same school that my niece and nephew go to and my son is actually in the same class as his cousin. Family is even closer than I originally thought.

Another reason for living in a fifth wheel was to start planting roots. We were under the impression that we would be building a house on Cody's family farm however we realized those pans would not be able to happen and rather than continue to live in the fifth wheel and have the kids start school in that town we decided it would be best to look for a permanent house so the kids wouldn't have to change schools again.

Lastly, a goal of living in a fifth wheel was to simplify our lives. We wanted to not have our lives be consumed by things. It was such an eye opening experience living in the fifth wheel and seeing how little we really needed to be just as happy. We will continue to let God fill us up rather than material things.

As I already said, our journey with a fifth wheel is not over just because we don't sleep in it every night. We still travel for work and we still work remotely so traveling is something that is very much a part of our lives. We will continue to keep this blog alive and share our adventures.Natashahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00089846235435592353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-142540702526318236.post-62316115221333158762016-08-17T10:53:00.001-05:002016-08-17T10:54:12.894-05:00I Will Not Let the Devil Steal My JoyEver since I've been young I have been embarrassed to wear a swimsuit. I don't know why or where this insecurity stems from. I remember being a teenager and loving the pool but hating having to wear a swimsuit. When I bought my first home I purchased a pool so that I didn't have to go to the public pool anymore. Being in a swimsuit in public just made me uncomfortable.

It's not that I'm insecure with how I look. My weight has fluctuated over the years but I've always been happy with my body regardless if I was a little bigger or when I was most fit training for a marathon.

I sold my house over a year ago so anytime since then I've had to swim in public, which meant being seen by people in a swimsuit. I love my body I just hate swimsuits on my body. Always have. So swimming is always my least favorite thing to do.

I don't want to be a downer when I'm with the kids so anytime they want to swim I suck it up and put on my dreaded swimsuit and a happy face. The whole time I'm not as happy as I could be.

I started to ponder why I let myself feel this way. Being insecure in a swimsuit was affecting how much fun I had with my kids. That's when I decided that I WILL NOT LET THE DEVIL STEAL MY JOY.

The insecurities I had were not coming from God, they were thoughts the devil placed in my head when I was younger and I let those thoughts manifest so much that I was unhappy wearing a swimsuit. No more. I decided I would no longer care how I looked in a swimsuit.

That was almost a year ago and although I still hear the devil try to convince me to care how my arms look a bit flabby in a particular swimsuit or another makes my thighs look big I instantly tell myself that I'm perfect how I am and I will not let thoughts from the devil make me feel any different.

I WILL NOT LET THE DEVIL STEAL MY JOY!

We left at 10am and headed for Charlotte for a work meeting. We went to see one of our manufacturers that we represent and took a tour of the plant that is located in Charlotte. The kids went to a daycare in Charlotte during that time.

The trip from Myrtle Beach to Charlotte was only 3.5 hours but from Charlotte home it was about 11 hours. Lots of driving but luckily the kids are so well behaved while traveling that it is just long, not stressful.

Our trip was amazing. We had so much fun. Thank you Lord for giving us this opportunity to travel and make memories.
